Libya’s ex-leader Muammar Gaddafi was captured and killed
Circumstances around Muammar Gaddafi’s death were uncertain for several hours today, however, it has been confirmed that the ex-leader of Libya was killed. Details are unclear of his death, though a video has emerged showing that Gaddafi was captured alive before his death.
People loyal to the NTC( National Transitional Council) found Gaddafi hiding in a hole and attempted to shot after he tried to escape. The news of his death has been a relief for both citizens of Libya and Western political leaders.
President Obama says that today ” was a “momentous day” for Libya, now that tyranny has fallen. He said Libya had a “long and winding road towards full democracy,” but the U.S. and other countries would stand behind it.
The colonel was receiving assistance from his two sons, one of which was killed on Thursday. Video footage of a bloodied body surfaced and some channels have proclaimed that they showed the colonel’s body being dragged down the street.
Citizens of Libya are ecstatic about the news and many have been celebrating throughout the country. The NTC’s acting prime minister Mustafa Abdul Jalil who confirmed Gaddafi’s death said, “I think it’s for the Libyans to realise that it’s time to start a new Libya, a united Libya, one people, one future.”
