Turkey has been hit by a 5.7 magnitude earthquake
The AP reports that the latest Turkey earthquake measured 5.7 on the Richter magnitude scale. It took place Wednesday.
The earthquake toppled 25 buildings in the city of Van. Only three of them were occupied. So far, 26 survivors have been rescued from the debris. Rescue workers worked through the night on Wednesday and into Thursday, despite aftershocks striking the area.
One of the buildings that collapsed was the Bayram Hotel. An undetermined number of people became trapped when it toppled. Many of the hotel’s guests were journalists covering the the October 23 Turkey earthquake and relief efforts.
This is the latest earthquake to strike Turkey. A 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck the country on October 23, killing 600 people.
Atsushi Miyazaki, of the Association for Aid and Relief, Japan, was one of the individuals pulled from the rubble. He later died of his injuries in a hospital.
The earthquake’s epicenter was nine miles south of Van.
