Harry Morgan best known as Colonel Potter on “M*A*S*H”
Harry Morgan has died at the age of 96. Morgan’s son, Charles, confirmed his death. The New York Times reports that Morgan died Wednesday in his home in Los Angeles.
Morgan had a long-lasting career as a character actor, appearing in over 100 movies. Morgan also had a prolific TV career, appearing in “Dragnet,” “Pete and Gladys,” “December Bride,” “The Richard Boone Show,” “Kentucky Jones,” “The D.A.,” “Hec Ramsey” and “Blacke’s Magic.”
Morgan is perhaps best known for his role as Colonel Sherman T. Potter on the long-running hit “M*A*S*H.” Morgan replaced McLean Stevenson who had decided to leave the show. Morgan fondly remembered Potter, saying, “He was firm. He was a good officer and he had a good sense of humor. I think it’s the best part I ever had.”
Morgan was born Harry Bratsburg on April 10, 1915, in Detroit to Norwegian immigrants. Deciding to pursue theater instead of law, Morgan made his his Broadway debut in 1937 in the original production of “Golden Boy.”
