Tim Lincecum’s request nears record amount sought in arbitration
San Francisco Giants’ Tim Lincecum asked for $21.5 million in salary arbitration on Tuesday and was offered $17 million by the club.
CBS News reports that Lincecum’s request is nearing the record amount sought in arbitration — Roger Clemens’ request for $22 million in 2005. San Francisco’s return offer of $17 million is the highest offer in arbitration history.
As a two-time NL Cy Young Award winner and the winning pitcher in the Game 5 World Series clincher at Texas in 2010, the Giants would like to tie Lincecum down with a long-term contract, but Lincecum is intent on keeping his options open.
“We know we’ll at least have a one-year deal,” Bobby Evans, Giants vice president of baseball operations, said. “I can’t really predict where it will end up. In this process your two parties are always filing to try to come to a midpoint. The negotiation is really about the midpoint.”
