Jacksonville Jaguars team member strives to redeem his reputation
Jacksonville Jaguars’ Justin Blackmon was arrested for aggravated DUI Sunday in Oklahoma, with a .24 blood alcohol level. The officer smelled the alcohol on Blackmon’s breath after pulling over the 22-year-old former Oklahoma Cowboys star Sunday.
Aggravated DUI is charged in Oklahoma when the blood alcohol level of the driver reaches above .15. Officers tried to pull Justin Blackmon over when they noticed he was driving 60 mph in a 35 mph zone and driving off center, according to police spokesman Capt. Randy Dickerson.
“He was unsteady on his feet, his speech was slurred and his eyes were glassy and blood shot,” Dickerson said. “He admitted to consuming alcohol prior to driving.”
Justin Blackmon took responsibility for his actions.
“I’m embarrassed to be in this position,” Justin Blackmon said. “I’m truly sorry to my family, to my friends and to Oklahoma State all together. I look forward to redeeming myself and proving to everybody that this isn’t who I am. I’m not this guy. I’m humbled by this experience and I will grow from it.”
The Jaguars team chose Justin Blackmon in April in hopes for an upgrade to the team. The Florida Times-Union blogger, Gene Frenette, worries that this choice could be representative of poor judgment by the team.
On his choice of Justin Blackmon, Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey said, “He’s one of these guys who doesn’t think he can be covered. That’s pretty important at that position with that kind of confidence, that you can line up and dare somebody to try to stop you and believe that you can’t be. I like that edge,”
Blackmon paid a $1,000 bail and is set to go to court Monday.
