The pledge process and what to expect
When joining a fraternity/sorority one has to go through an initiation process which would, then make the individual a full-fledged member of the organization. This process is known as pledging and involves the new member – or “pledge” – performing a series of tasks in order to become a member.
Pledging can involve a variety of tasks, and, often, the negative connotation of hazing is associated with it. This, however, is not the case with the majority of fraternities and sororities. For them, pledging consists of pledges wearing a pledge pin, maintaining a certain GPA, learning about the organization and doing public service.
Pledges should inquire about the pledging process with the specific organization they wish to join, as duties and responsibilities vary from organization to organization.
Once the pledge has completed all responsibilities required of him or her, that pledge is now a full-fledged member of the society with all benefits and rights taking effect immediately.
Remember, if you believe that hazing is going on during pledging, don’t be afraid to report the incidents or speak to your campus’ office of Greek life. Hazing is always unacceptable.
