Teen sustained chemical burns, had a double lung transplant
Brandon Rice sustained chemical burns to both of his lungs after smoking synthetic marijuana. Now, Rice’s mother tells reporters that he has died.
The AP reports that Rice sustained the chemical burns after smoking synthetic marijuana out of a plastic candy dispenser. He was put on a respirator in June and had a double lung transplant in September.
Rice’s mother, Tonya, says that the anti-rejection drugs Brandon began taking since his transplant weakened his immune system, making him unable to fight off infection. He died Thursday morning at a Pennsylvania hospital.
Since Brandon’s injury and illness, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett has outlawed substances like synthetic marijuana. The ban went into effect in August.
